About the course

Aceh Studies offers a comprehensive understanding of Aceh’s contribution to the history of Islamic and Nusantara civilization. The course emphasizes the dimensions of Islamic scholarship, sharia, and Acehnese local wisdom that have historically and culturally shaped the socio-religious identity of Acehnese society. Students examine Aceh’s role in global civilizational networks — through its scholars (ulama), its institutions of learning, and a spiritual diplomacy rooted in a long history.

The course also situates Islamic sharia as a distinctive local system operating within social, cultural, and legal contexts, so that students understand how it is applied in everyday life. It further explores social dynamics including post-conflict reconstruction, responses to natural disaster, and the ongoing transformation of cultural identity. Aceh thus appears not only as a local case study but as a model of analysis relevant to national and global academic discourse on knowledge, sharia, and Islamic civilization.
