Aceh’s identity has always been closely tied to Arabic influence, from the arrival of early ulama who founded Islamic kingdoms to the flourishing of intellectual networks with the Middle East. Known as the Veranda of Mecca, Aceh absorbed Arabic traditions in law, literature, and spirituality, while also engaging with Indian, Persian, Chinese, and European cultures. This article explores the four historical stages of Arabic influence in Aceh and shows why understanding Arabic heritage is essential to understanding Acehnese identity itself.
