How publication decisions are made

We publish work that says something specific to a definable reader. That sounds obvious, but it rules out a great deal. A manuscript that surveys a field without adding to it, a report that restates a consensus, a book proposed mainly to advance a career — these get declined, sometimes after considerable work has gone into them. We would rather have that conversation early than produce a title nobody needs.

Assessment looks at four things: whether the argument is clear enough to be disagreed with, whether the evidence actually supports it, whether the intended reader exists in useful numbers, and whether we are the right publisher. The last question matters. Work that belongs with a specialist scientific press is better served there, and we say so.

Formats and why they differ

Different arguments need different containers. A full book is right when an idea needs sustained development and cannot survive compression. Working papers suit findings that are solid but still moving, where circulating early is worth more than waiting for finality. Policy briefs exist for readers with limited time and a decision to make, which means ruthless editing and an explicit recommendation. Teaching texts are built backwards from what a student must be able to do by the end.

Choosing the wrong format is one of the most common reasons good work fails to land. A brilliant policy brief buried inside chapter seven of a monograph reaches nobody who needed it.

Working with authors

Editing here is substantive, not cosmetic. Authors should expect questions about structure, about claims that outrun their evidence, and about passages that are doing less work than their length suggests. This is uncomfortable and it is the most valuable part of the process. Manuscripts that go through it are consistently shorter, clearer and more useful than the versions that arrived.

Published titles are indexed in the Library so they remain findable alongside the reference material they draw on. Where a publication emerges from institutional research, the underlying project is documented through the Research Center, and the conversion work itself is handled by the Knowledge Factory. Authors teaching related material can link their titles to courses in the Academy.

Proposals should include the argument in a paragraph, a chapter outline, an honest description of the intended reader, and a sample of finished writing. A paragraph that cannot state the argument is usually a sign the argument has not been settled yet.
