Artificial Intelligence

How machine intelligence reorganises knowledge, power, labour and human agency, and how societies can govern it responsibly.

Overview

Scope of the domain

This domain studies artificial intelligence not only as a technology but as an infrastructure that redistributes epistemic authority. Research here follows the chain from compute, data and models to the institutions, markets and publics that come to depend on them, with particular attention to the Global South, Muslim societies and Southeast Asia, where AI arrives faster than the governance capacity to absorb it.

Work in this domain builds on the KBA13 Compute-Power Doctrine and the Layered-Dependency Model, and connects directly to the AI Laboratory, where prototypes are tested under human review. Outputs combine conceptual frameworks, policy analysis and practical guidance for universities, governments and civil society organisations navigating algorithmic transition.

Key research questions

  • Who controls the compute, data and models that shape public knowledge?
  • How does AI dependence change sovereignty, labour and education?
  • What forms of human agency survive in algorithmic environments?
  • Which governance models fit societies with limited regulatory capacity?

Focus areas

  • AI governance and policy
  • Epistemic power and digital dependence
  • AI in education and research
  • Responsible AI and verification
