Program 03 of 7
Applied Research
Research designed around practical challenges and their implementation in real organisations.
Overview
Applied Research
Applied Research starts from a practical challenge, such as improving a university’s research output, designing a disaster-recovery communication plan, or building an AI-assisted workflow, and asks what knowledge is needed to act well. Success is measured by usefulness and implementation, not only by publication.
Projects are co-designed with the people who will use the results. They often produce toolkits, protocols, prototypes and case studies, and many are developed alongside the AI Laboratory, where solutions can be tested before they are recommended.
Typical questions
- What exactly is not working, and for whom?
- What evidence and tools would make a difference?
- How can a solution be piloted and evaluated?
- How can success be sustained after the project ends?
Approach
- Problem diagnosis with users
- Rapid evidence review
- Prototype and pilot
- Evaluation and iteration
